Welcome to celebrate Baltic Sea Day with an Open House at Husö Biological Station on 27 August, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM!

Spend the afternoon meeting researchers, projects, and organisations working for healthier waters and a thriving Baltic Sea. Discover fascinating underwater habitats, learn more about the plants and animals living in our coastal waters, and explore practical actions that help improve water quality in Åland.

Participants include Husö Biological Station, Åbo Akademi University, the Central Baltic Programme, Resilient Sea, Clean Water 2030, Marine Waterways, Åland Nature School, the Baltic Sea Fund, Åland Water, Åland Nature & Environment, the Government of Åland, and the Åland Fisheries Management Centre Guttorp.

During the event, you can:

• Discover newcomers to our coastal waters and learn about life beneath the surface.
• Explore important underwater habitats in the Baltic Sea.
• Learn about the research and activities of Husö Biological Station and Åbo Akademi University.
• Find out how marine habitats can be restored and strengthened through conservation efforts.
• Explore local water protection projects and practical measures to improve lakes, bays, and coastal waters.
• Try pond dipping, examine aquatic organisms under magnifying glasses and microscopes, and enjoy activities for the whole family.
• Watch short films about the Baltic Sea and learn fascinating facts about life above and below the surface.
• Learn about Baltic Sea projects funded through the Central Baltic Programme, take part in children’s activities, and make your own pledge to the Baltic Sea.
• Talk to experts about water protection, drinking water, and future water and wastewater solutions.
• Share your favourite natural areas in Åland and contribute ideas for future green infrastructure planning.
• Meet fisheries experts and learn about efforts to support healthy fish stocks and aquatic ecosystems.

Bus Transportation

A bus will depart from Shell Select at 3:00 PM and return from Husö at 7:00 PM.

Refreshments

We will serve light soup and refreshments while supplies last. Feel free to bring the whole family and a picnic basket for an enjoyable afternoon by the sea.
